On-horse repellents are a big weapon in the battle against pests, but how do you know which ones to choose? Your horse’s personal environment will influence your choice of repellents and help determine whether a spray, spot-on or wipe-on is best. In some cases, a combination will be helpful.
If your horse lives on pasture and you aren’t able to spray him regularly with a repellent product, try a spot-on, which lasts up to two weeks.
When it comes to spray repellents, select the one most effective for your situation. For instance, a sweat-resistant product is a smart choice for working, perspiring horses. Wipe-ons are always helpful for horses with an intense dislike of being sprayed, and also for sensitive areas such as around the face and ears.
Some on-horse repellents are also effective as premise sprays and can be used to help protect the barn area. Read the label to determine if the product you’re applying to your horse is also designated for this use.
